Henley-Putnam University?s next free webinar takes an in-depth look at how trade in intellectual property violations is used to launder proceeds from illicit black-market activity into the mainstream economy, thus providing income for terrorists and criminals alike.

On Wednesday, May 30th, 2012 at 1:00 PM, EDT, Ms. Amanda Morrow-Jensen will discuss the relationship between grey market trade in intellectual property violations and terrorist or criminal income streams, review the changing financial landscape of criminal money-laundering and how advances in law enforcement have impacted illicit trade, and analyze the opportunities in international law and regional agreements to link intellectual property rights protections to counter terrorist activities.

With all the global threats facing nation-states right now, grey market trade in products that violate intellectual property rights ? such as fake purses, DVDs, or clothing ? often rank low on the priority list for law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Increasingly, however, these products are used as a tool to launder proceeds from illicit black-market activity into the mainstream economy, providing an income stream for terrorists and criminals in which the general public is an unwitting partner.

?Though international law, especially for members of the World Trade Organization, is quite clear on the issue of intellectual property violations, cooperation between countries is minimal, a function of differing social and cultural values as well as divergent law enforcement priorities and procedures,? Ms. Morrow-Jensen explains. ?By taking advantage of the clarity of international law and agreements on this topic, and linking the outcomes to terrorist and criminal assets, the United States has the opportunity to increase pressure on an often overlooked area of terrorist and criminal financing.?

ABOUT MS. AMANDA MORROW-JENSEN

As the Dean of Henley-Putnam University?s Terrorism and Counterterrorism Studies Program, Amanda Morrow-Jensen designs and implements new programs and policies pertaining to Counterterrorism, oversees course curriculum growth, and ensures students focusing on Terrorism and Counterterrorism Studies are fully prepared to apply their education to the real world.

Prior to her work in education, Morrow-Jensen spent almost a decade developing foreign policy as a Foreign Service Officer for the US Department of State in Indonesia, Vietnam, and Washington DC. In 2003, Morrow-Jensen served as the East Asia Policy Advisor to the Deputy Secretary of State during the North Korea nuclear tests crisis. More broadly, for several years, Morrow-Jensen worked as a political-economic expert, analyzing and reporting on macroeconomic environments, international investment climates and anti-money laundering and counterterrorism finance efforts and their impact on US business and security. Her efforts led the Department of State to the forefront of foreign investigations, increasing strategic security methods within our nation and abroad. Morrow-Jensen is the recipient of numerous honor awards in foreign policy and is an active contributor to several Washington, DC think tank publications.

Amanda Morrow-Jensen earned her M.S. in Strategic Intelligence from the National Defense Intelligence College in Washington, D.C. in 2005 and her BA in International Relations and Spanish Literature and Language from the University of Virginia in 1999.
